A fire broke out at an ISKCON camp in Maha Kumbh Nagar, located in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, on Friday. The incident occurred at Sector 18, Shankaracharya Marg, within the Maha Kumbh Mela Kshetra, fire officials confirmed.
Chief Fire Officer Pramod Sharma stated that upon receiving the alert, fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the location. “The fire has been completely doused,” Sharma informed.
Dense smoke covered the area, creating panic among devotees and nearby akhadas. Several camps in the vicinity sustained damage, though no casualties have been reported.
Inspector Yogesh Chaturvedi of Khak Chowk police station said the fire ignited near Tulsi Chauraha on Old GT Road. “Firefighters successfully brought the situation under control,” Chaturvedi stated. Fire department personnel remained at the site to monitor the aftermath.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and assessing the extent of damage. Officials assured that safety measures were in place to prevent similar incidents.
This marks the third fire incident reported in the Maha Kumbh Mela area. Last month, a major blaze occurred following a cylinder explosion in Sector 19, injuring one individual and engulfing 18 tents.
At that time, 15 fire tenders were deployed to contain the flames. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who was in Prayagraj for Mauni Amavasya preparations, visited the site and instructed officials to implement measures to prevent future fire hazards.
During the previous fire incident, a person identified as Jaspreet fainted while escaping and sustained a leg injury. He was provided first aid at the Maha Kumbh Mela hospital before being transferred to Swaruprani Medical College for further treatment. Authorities confirmed that his condition was stable.
Following the recent fire, officials cordoned off the affected area to ensure safety. Spectators captured visuals of rising flames and smoke using their mobile phones.
DIG (Maha Kumbh) Vaibhav Krishna confirmed via social media that the fire had been “completely controlled” and reassured that no one had been injured.
Akhada Police Station In-charge Bhaskar Mishra noted that the previous fire in Sector 19 resulted from two LPG cylinder explosions, intensifying the blaze across multiple tents.
